A Konkani film festival would be held from next year to mark Konkani Cinema Day. This was announced by Tiatr Academy Goa President, Mr Tomazinho Cardozo at the Konkani Cinema Day celebrations held recently.
“The committee for this festival will consist of the Dalgado Konkanni Akademi, Tiatr Academy Goa along with film producers and directors. We will also call Bollywood stars to add star value to this festival,” added Mr Cardozo.
“In order to improve the quality of Konkani films, producers and directors must with all seriousness make Konkani films, so that the Konkani film matches with a certain standard” stated Rajendra Talak, producer and director of one of Konkani’s most commercially successful ‘O Maria’ . He was speaking as the chief guest on the occasion of Konkani Cinema Day jointly organised by Tiatr Academy Goa and Dalgado Konknni Akademi recently at TAG’s Conference Hall, Campal, Panaji.
Speaking further he appealed to all involved in the production of Konkani films to shed off their crab mentality and work in unity for the development of Konkani cinema.
Paying tribute to the first Konkani filmmaker, A L Jerry Braganza, the chief guest and filmmaker, Rajendra Talak said tie ups with multiplexes would result in a better response from the people.
He also said “Tiatr should not be converted into movies as this brings down the quality of the film. Tiatr in its original form will itself draw a good response.”
The president of Dalgado Konknni Akademi, Mr Premanand Lotlikar in his welcome speech stated that the sacrifices of the pioneer of Konkani cinema, namely AL Jerry Braganza who is known as the ‘Father of Konkani Cinema’ for producing and releasing the first Konkani film ‘Mogacho Anvddo’ in 1950, should not go in vain and that he should be remembered for his efforts of promoting Konkani cinema amidst difficult times.
Mr Lotlikar said, “The government should screen A L Jerry Braganza’s first film ‘Mogacho Anvddo’ during IFFI.”
Mr Tomazinho Cardozo while speaking on the occasion stated that Konkani cinema has not attained commercial success, not because all of them are below standard, but rather because of the negative attitude of Goans towards Konkani cinema. If we love Konkani and love Goan culture, then it is the duty of every Goan to witness Konkani cinemas by paying tickets. When this attitude is imbibed in us then only will Konkani cinema rise to greater heights.
Earlier Rajendra Talak garlanded the portrait of AL Jerry Braganza as a mark of respect to the Father of Konkani cinema. Mr Walter Menezes compered the function.
The formal function was followed by a cultural programme of songs from old Konkani films, rendered by Socorro de Santa Cruz, Sonia Fernandes, Clarissa and Maria Cardozo.
